    In the process of exploring literacy in English 201 class, I have significantly improvement on basic writing skills such as citing a source properly, use the formal language, structure a paper, writing a clear thesis statement and etc. The course makes me aware of the importance of literacy. I realized that writing a paper requires multiple skills, it included structuring, proofreading, editing, and citing skills. I recall the first paper I wrote for the class, extensive grammatical and citation errors were throughout the paper. The global structure are important, but the local structure can also be costly in term of points. I understood that writing a paper is like crafting a fine piece of art, which need improving and editing through its process.

    The citing skill I learned in this class help me a lot. Knowing how to cite others work and though is a crucial ability in all academic fields. We are able to utilize others’ research result to add credibility to our own paper, at the same time avoiding plagiarism.  In addition, I would have to improve my grammar. It is hard for me to comprehend complex grammars, however I would write more, and find someone edit my work.

     Children are the future of our nation. Majority of the population is getting older and retiring, this results in young people being responsible for keeping our society functioning. With the great burden on children, they must be trained properly to ensure the flourish future.  What exactly shape the new generation? The family factors has direct relation with a child’s potential development since they mold them through everyday activities. Family factors decided who the child is going to be. Children are born naive and honest,they can not see the ambiguity of things happening. For the most of the time, children will imitate or follow what they see and experience. However, kids are fast learner and easy adopter, it is necessary to provide them positive model and a stable family conditions early in childhood in order to prevent juvenile delinquency.

Providing toddlers and teenagers a positive model is crucial because they can not distinguish whether some thing is good or bad. Many parents often neglected that their own behaviors is a reflect mirror to their child. Parent think their child will only be educated in school. The fact is that parent’s behavior also have great impact on a child. Growing up in a family where parents are alcoholic, thief, robber or drug dealer, the child has higher chances to act the same way. According to a popular debate of nature VS nurture, “ when a identical twins are raised in two environments, their behaviors will be different”(Sarah, M.S,2012). The debate explicitly means that nurture is more important than nature when it comes to the behavior of child. while the nature of child may reveal some physical traits of their parent, nurture is the key component that decides the child’s identity. When two identical twins are exposed to different environment, their genetic inherent plays a small role here. The debate proves that it is extremely important to nurture children under positive modeling, and  parent’s behaviors should lead by example.

   Even though it is crucial to provide positive example for the well development of child, many parent still misbehave. The incarceration of parent causes childhood delinquency and adolescent offense. Recent study shows “the U.S incarceration rate is in parallel with the number of child who experienced parental incarceration” (Will, Whalen and Loper 2014 p.190). It reveals that many fathers and mothers got arrest. The fact is important to know because it has direct relationship with second generation offender. The term second generation offender is used when the offender’s parent were involved in criminal justice system. Research shows child who has incarcerated parent are more likely to have developmental problems such as anti-social behaviors. They mentions that “The experience of parental incarceration places children at risk for later being incarcerated themselves”(Will, Whalen and loper 2014 p.193). All the presumption were proven by theories. Will, Whalen and Loper list of 3 main problems will occur within parental incarceration families, which are: lack of stability within family, lack of supervision of child and development of insecure attachment style. Children most likely join delinquent activities when they are not supervised. In short, kids who grow up without supervision of parent are more likely to commit and become second generation offender.

While the imprison of parent influences child, the separation and absence of parent are worst, it puts child’s life in risk of mortality. When one’s life is in danger, the human nature urged them to survive by any means included kill others. Based on New York Times (2015), a man named Davis, was a juvenile murderer, sentenced for a life term in jail without parole. It means Davis will never have chance to see the outside world again. All of his delinquency was forced by his childhood deprivation. Davis described that he lived in a family with careless mother and a absent father. He mentions how he survive by picking cans and pumped gas for tips and shoplift. Until one day he fell in gangster Disciples, he felt like home. he say “I loved them, they protected me, they were my family,”(ERIK ECKHOLM 2015). In fact, Davis was just a normal kid who seek for a safe harbor. He was not born a bad apple, he was forced to do something in order to survive. Perhaps his parent were present when he was child, and provided a better condition for him. He may not join the gang and become a murder. Davids suggests the failure of his family makes him suffer from both emotional and physical pain. Davis, Instead of become a child at an age who should watch TV cartoon at home, stayed at maximum security jail for 23 hour a day. Who is going to take responsibility for his misbehave? Davis’ story tells us an incomplete family structure really make a mess within a child’s life. parents should never allow their relationship to have impact on child because they are vulnerably physically and mentally.

While a broken home destroyed a childhood, child who live in a domestic violence family would also develop deviant behaviors. The true victim of domestic violence is their children. Although children are previously labeled as silent witness of domestic violent, however this opinion has been topple off by more current qualitative research. Lemmey, malecha, and Mcfarlane (2001) conduct a descriptive research. They discovered that many children who observe violent act against their mothers have greater behavioral problem than children who do not observe such violent. The research argues domestic violence have worst affect on child’s behavior among all kind of violence because the person use violent is the one who provides protection for them, and the effects was worst for girls. As result of domestic violence, there are two different types of effect may form from witnessing it. One is internalizing, and the other is externalizing (Lemmey, malecha, and Mcfarlane 2001). The internalizing often involves in child’s emotional waves while externalizing causes delinquency and aggression. Both internalizing and externalizing behavior expose child to a risky future.

They are isolated in small community with limited social mobility. The neighborhood are most likely in same social class, and they have little interact with higher ranked people as well. When one’s social mobility are constrained, there are little or not progression in their life.

Family economic condition would also affect the quality of a childhood. David, Nicola, and john(2004) observed 1,265 children ( 635 males, 630 females), found that the child who live under poor economic condition or disadvantages have more involvement in crime later.  This argument was supported by strain theory (Merton 1957), it explains the social hierarchy within our society may pressure people to commit crime. The theory shows “Individuals in disadvantaged groups act in ways that predispose them to engage in innovative, but deviant acts to redress these strains(David, Nicola, John 2004 P.956).” In conclusion, that the social-economic deprivation causes stress among young people. Based on the strain theory, young people with poor family may think they are worthless and inferior as compare to rich family child. Often times, those strains predisposed them to delinquency. they act in deviant ways in order to reduce the stress.

Many variety forms of factors that affects childhood development. But what can be done to prevent them from later delinquency? It is not doubt juvenile violence has become a concern in the criminal justice field and there is a vital need for rehabilitation programs for juvenile offenders. However, rehabilitation programs are obviously insufficient for deviant behaviors. Ray E. Bilderaya (2005) argues that as many as 69 % of juvenile delinquent parolees are rearrested for serious crimes within six years of their release. It shows that delinquency have further impact within one’s life, and It is embedded in their mind. It be must be done by two ways, one is remove it’s cause, and second is control it’s effect. The cause of delinquency forms depend on many variables. It can be defined in three main categories: Demographic, increased population of juvenile and environmental factors.

 However, it is hard for anyone to control those three causes. One may argues, child who grown up in bad neighbor could also success in life. Malcolm X, who, was black minority, grown up in worst neighborhood, live without father, yet he become a great civil leader. It must be admit that Malcolm X was good counter claim for the argument. Nonetheless, it is still not strong enough. Malcolm X was growing up around drug dealer, and the environment did have impact on him. He was sentenced at a young age because the absence of his father, and lack of supervision. Moreover, Malcolm ‘s case strengthen the claim that positive modeling would enhance one’s life. He learns knowledge in jail, and in jail he discover the spirit of Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm X educated him self, and yet, if not with the help of Elijah, he could not make it.

The development of child has always been the concern of all parent, they are willing to spend huge amount investment on them. But only material support is not enough, many of them need to spend more time on child and provide them stable family with positive environment because it is what truly decided the future of child. Ray E. Bilderaya (2005) suggests that “Children need to be taught....early in order to live... productive life. This includes discipline with consistency. A parent must be willing to put .....produce a non-delinquent child.” In short, in order to have non-delinquent child, parent must learn to behave in front of their child, and provided them a good learning environment earlier in childhood.

                       Genetically Modified Foods

  The research paper written by student was well structure, and the topic was interesting. In the fast developing country, people care more and more about eating healthy and stay in shape. But one thing can really shock them, the so called “healthy food” are mostly produce in lab, and with lots chemical in it. While customers spend high price for those junk food, they are also accumulating the poison within their body.

   I like the topic very much, it is fun and yet prevailing. People have right to know what are they eating. This research paper reveals many secrets by using scientific experiences and results, which is persuasive. The facts about GM food was shocking, I never know the impact of eating GM food until I read the article. It is terrifying and yet many people are still paying high prices for GM food because most of the GM food are delicious. As a result of the study, children who have alcoholic parent at age 9, are more likely to misbehave as compare to child with no or mild parent alcohol problem, and Children have poor relationship with their parent as compares to children without alcoholic parent. It also suggest that In a family with at least one alcoholic, the stability within family structure was destroyed.  When the stability within a family are broken, child are the first victim.

I agree that awareness is one of the solution to fight against human trafficking. However, there can be more solutions that may help prevent human trafficking from happening. I believe if there are severe punishment make against slavery owner or violator, the amount of human trafficking should decrease. One way can also attributed to attenuate the amount of human trafficking is presenting this issue through media, and let more people known the potential dangers around. Most of the human trafficker offer some profit or a promise to lure the victim or the victim’s family, if they are aware of the hidden purpose, they would not be easily trafficked. If the government or major Medias can advocate anti-slavery topics, and reveal some way to avoid being trafficked, the amount should have decreased. I like how the student corporate the data when he say the U.S spent such huge amount of money on war and drug, but there are only few millions spend in legislation for the victim of slavery. It shows government does not care much about human trafficking, and it is a reason that allow violator to do whatever they want.

     When the student mention two examples of slaves, he uses detailed description of how slave been treated in modern society. It provided emotional appeal to readers, and

     The Birthmark by Nathaniel Hawthorne is about a tragedy of a beautiful women called Georgiana. She married a addicted scientist who is never in love with her. The scientist named Aylmer is a perfectionist, he cares about his scientific inventions only. He did not realized the birthmark on Georgiana’s face at first. One day after they got married, the man Aylmer took a close look at her and found a hand shape birthmark. He was disgusted by it and called it evil hand while other people said the birthmark was attractive. The hand mark’s color changes as Georgiana changes her mood, and Aylmer was finally exploded. He try potion on Georgianan and put put her life on risk to satisfy his overloaded confident of his science. When Georgiana passed, he was still obsess with his failure.

   From this article, I found a theme is one would take any cost to satisfy own desires. Aylmer was so enjoy of scientific competition, and he always wants to be the top in this field in order to feel comfort. He wants to demonstrated his ability of controlling one’s fate. Aylmer puts her wife in danger for his desire of perfection. Obviously he knew about the harm of potion, but he still executed it. This shows he is selfish person, and he can do anything for his purpose. One thing he could never foreseen is the costly price of been a perfectionist. One should never harm others for own pleasure, the outcome may be dramatic.

                        Title; who to blame?

Thesis; Family factors decided who the child are going to be, and the family take direct responsibility with the child’s potential development since they mold the child through daily activities.

Body paragraph one: child who have better modeling would behave in a better manner than those do not have access to it. David Popenoe, (1998) supports my topic by using a New York time article. The article suggest if the driver buckle up, child do the same. In order to get child buckle up, we have to make sure the drivers provide a good example. According to the David, child are fast learner and easy adopter, they follows what everybody do. A driver would have such impacts on child’s behavior, not to mention a parent. Parents are best modeling of child. Child who born in a well educated family will be edified better. Oppositely child who have parent with behavioral problem will be negatively affect.

    Raw material by Jane Masher was so impressive and remarkable. It personally gives me a lot of courage for overcomeing obstacles in life. I found that nothing is impossible by knowing the achievemrnt of some inmates. Especially when Jane mentions how some inmates are so intelligent that they can even become a CEO or officers of a company. I was thinking that if those inmates could regret for what they have done and get a second chance, they can be somebody. Indeed, some of them did success. They have not different than a normal people and people sometimes make mistakes.

   Often times, I felt that I have many disadvantages as a new immigrant. After knowing the condition of those inmates have, I see myself as lucky one because we have bright classrooms with high technology. By reading the experience of some inmates, I found significant of education. It is something that worth a lifetime to pursue of. No matter where you are and how bad the condition are, should not be excuses for not learning.

The article was admirable. It ignites my passion and inspires me to be a better person.

They want to explore the causes of juvenile sexual offending and find out whether family factors is part of the reasons. The authors uses archival data collected from the files of 2,771 convicted sexual offenders.They study offender’s family backgrounds in order to examine the relationship between family composition with the number and types of sexual offenses. Finally researchers discovered that the guardian of young offender and the surrounding have direct effects on his/or her behaviors.

     As scholars in psychology, O'Toole, M. J., & Jeglic, E. L. are fully aware of situational variables, such as different races, religions and social classes all may affect the result of the study. So they pick large amout of samples from wide range populations and study them individually. The purpose of the research is to find out how childhood socio-economic disadvantages cause varies of problems and examine the “linkages” between crime and socio-disadvantages.  It is very controversy, which many people argues that economic disadvantage is not a excuse for offending. However , as the result of the study, the authors find out child who born in low SES family has over 3 times chance to commit crime than people who born in high SES.

   The source is credible since it is a large research project and the study objects were real people chosed from specific area. The source was in a nutrual position which it does not clearly state whether something is good or bad. They only observe the facts and record the data. The study of socio-disadvantages enrich my knowledge, It tells that the economic condition and social class of a family also affects the behavior of young children.

                    How Family factors leads to shape child?

 

    Family factors decided who the child are going to be in the future. The family has direct relations with who the child is becoming since they mold the children through everyday activities. He/or she will eventually act and talk the same way as their parent. Children can easily influenced by surroundings because they are devoid of sensation at such young age. They are less likely to see the ambiguity of things happened. For the most time they will imitate what they saw and experienced. In a modern society, family factors like divorce, single parent, racial identity and social classification all matters when it comes to nurture a child.

Realizing the effects of family variables on child is crucial. many young parents often neglected that their own behavior is a reflect mirror to the child. Growing up in a family where parent often misbehave, the child has higher chances to commit when he grows up. The dark side of the society are conditioning child to a new behavior and the parent’s negative images are reinforcing it. whether the behavior is good or bad, it will embed in children ‘s life.  Believe it or not, according to a debate of nature VS nurture, “when a identical twins are raised in two environments, their behaviors will be different” (Sarah, M.S, 2012). The debate shows that the environment shapes the identity of one. Also it proves that it is extremely important to have good behavior in front of child.

This topic is very important for the future of our society. Children are going to dominant the world twenty years later, it is necessary to ensure the quality of our future. To do that we have to intoxicate the little ones to learn good manner. With the growing number of young offenders who are often once a victim of multiple family factors, we need to find out solutions for them. what cause these children to constantly offend?  Are these children different than other children when they were born? All these question will be my focus.

In order to further develop my topic and continues to explore how family factors shape child, I am going to consult with credible scholar review sources, debate articles and etc. More specifically I will look for what exactly affect child on defining who they will be.  In what age, racial groups, and geographic area are these child most likely to misbehave leading by negative images. I will also look at some psychology references to support my topic. On structuring my actual paper, I am going to have examples of children who grown up in different racial groups, and comparing them to other area.       Negros know how severe consequences of protest against society will be, but freedom is too much temptation for them that they can not stop the craving of it. They can be put into jail,get beaten and kill. However, those protesters and the great civil rights movement leader who named Martin Luther King, Jr do not afraid, he reveals his determination in pursuit of social equality of negro and they are prepared for all the tackles may be encountered. The letter was about his journey at Birmingham with SCLC organizers. He wrote about the brutality and inhuman behaviors the police hold against negro, he wanted to protect Negros’ right in Birmingham. Also he addressed that he would not sit idly and let the unjustified law continues under the control of segregationists. He explained that injustice for one is injustice for all of Negros, they are all interrelated.

    The letter had demonstrated how powerful one’s words can be, King uses pathos to bring readers into a perceptual world that the current white society abuse of. As King described, there were many legitimate but unfair laws. Segregation itself was not fair, king mentioned in the letter, “All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality” (Jr, 1963 P.3).  By the quote King is telling the world that in order to establish equality, they have to desegregate the society, otherwise the society would never be ideal due to the twisted human soul. There was a law specially made in the southern area was called Jim crow law, “It legalized the separation of public system of black and white society” (David, P.2012). Blacks and whites were educated separately,and the African-American were often mistreated in school even if they had paid the same amount of money. King writes the letter with affirmative tone and it goes to national audience, he allows reader to examine the society and put their opinions and emotion on the barbarian action. Readers can experience the feeling a negro may have during the segregation time by reading his letter.

King utilized ethos perfectly which makes his language so strong. The credibility connects readers better and make the letter more persuasive. He included readers as a part of the civil movement.It demonstrates that he is willing to discuss with reader and make a better connection with audience. Also he shows Negros are hoping the untied of both society. King uses ethos through out the letter, when he says, “was catapulted into the leadership of the bus protest in Montgomery and have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference” (Jr, 1963 P.4-5). He implies that he is the one has most authority to speak of the object because he is the one deeply indulge in the civil right movement. At the end of the letter, King reminds that he was writing the letter in small cell which also makes the letter more convinced. It shows King is prepared for the tackle and he was not surprised of imprisonment. King really knows what he was saying and doing, which make readers have faith in him.

One’s word can never be so persuasive if the person had not been through tough road, he is not a exception. King knows injustice still occurs and if it happened to one people, the rest of people is going to suffer the same. He realized there must be some action in order to gain the attention from majorities. He lead African American to urge the society to desegregate by non-violent disobedient. He dedicated his whole life, fight for the human rights of colored. He started with gathering people for boycott, which, caused his house to be burn down and lost of his liberty. King’s life was full of tackles,but it will not stop him in contribution to African American’s society. He clearly knows, the only way he can truly liberate blacks, regain their entitlement is to keep going on the road. The suffering will only make one stronger.

     Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most influential leaders in American history, this letter is one of many reason why citizens have equal rights. His passage spreads a great impact on reader by some eloquent sentences. One example isOppressed people...oppressed forever"( Jr, 1963 P.4). The quote means none will stay in the downfall forever.Unlike other complicated and long sentence, it is short and clear at a glance.King refers the people in the sentence to African American who are always oppressed. Another example of syntax “Are you able to accept blows without retaliating?" and "Are you able to endure the ordeals of jail? (Jr, 1963 P.2). In those questions, King really wants reader to think hard. He hopes reader could put themselves under each of those situations, and feel his emotion. By Using the syntax King is really able to involve with readers, he wants reader to actively participate in his ideas.

   King states that he is willing to live up his dream and his pursues and it is not a matter if the consequence would be unmerciful punishment. He writes the letter with irony to strengthen his words and let the society know that he is still with them even though his body is in jail. In order to obtain realism, one has to know it’s fundamental element, which is Irony.  King assumes reader would ask for the reason of his imprison, so he explained, “Several months ago our local affiliate here in Birmingham .......organizational ties here”(Jr, P.1 1963). The quote means where injustice occurs they will be there. It is ironic because the men who are willing to speak up for injustice, will be throw into jail. King used irony to protrude protesters braveness, confident and wisdom. His imprison had shown that injustice was truly exist, and he did the right thing. As a leader, King kept his promise. The quote demonstrated King’s commitment in civil movement and proven that being a leader, one needs to confront many unknown possibilities. He used the power of irony to satirize the cruel society.

King does a great job in integrating the reasons for black people who constantly breaking the law at the time. The used of allusion has shown that it was the injustice law cause people to offend. King explains, “In any nonviolent campaign there are four basic steps: collection of the facts to determine whether injustices exist, negotiation, self-purification, and direct action. We have gone through all of these steps in Birmingham”(Jr, 1963 P.1).this reveals that king knows the injustice exist and it is particularly set against Negros. Despite, King follows procedures of non-violent action precisely, but he and his marchers were still under arrested. It alludes that unjustified law was meant to be break and people who dare to step up should not be punished. It is the law itself was faulty and the society was bias, so they were forced to break the law.

  King states many of his opinion in requisite of freedom, it allows reader to follow up with his intention, lead us travel through his mind. He says, “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed” (Jr, P.4 1963). this quote means that liberty is given to those people who are willing to fight for it, live for it and die for it. It will not come to you if you were careless.By the quote king emphasis that he is part of the nation. The quote was a perfect example of his opinion toward freedom. It conveys that the African-Americans has to take executive actions to prove the value of their life. It is also an indicator for the start of the march against injustice in Birmingham.

 In “letter from Birmingham jail” King uses of feverish tone really inspire readers and help people understand the severe circumstance that they are in. One can easily feel Jr’ s emotion when he writes , “Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial ‘outside agitator’ idea. Anyone who lives inside the United States can never be considered an outsider” (Jr, P.1 1963). It implies that injustice to one African-American directly, and to the whole group indirectly, they will no longer endure the inequality. They believe all people are equal in America. This quote alone with aggressive tone, which enable reader to perceive King’s strong desire for equality. The usage of the tone brings us an image of people, who are constantly mistreated has united together by the desire for liberty.

 The biggest strength of this letter is the used of pathos. He describes, “But when you .....when you see the vast majority of your twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society” (Corky.S May 3, 2012). The quote means Negros were living in poverty and the condition was really bad. The passage also provided us example of images. The used of verb such as lynch, curse, kick, kill and drown help to portray how badly racial differences influenced the way negro live. Also in order to gave us a concept of the harm bring by segregation he says, “the stinging darts of segregation.........” (Jr, P.6 1963). It portrays that segregation hurts people both psychically and mentally, and they are not willing to suffer anymore. All examples he indicated, has emotion appeal to reader, the verb he used create vivid pictures,which readers would feel like they have seen blacks were beating by cruel police. It enhances the letter by ties up the relationship between the Negros and the nation. King concluded the letter with the most effective language to the final urging people to join his ranks.
