The Birthmark by Nathaniel
Hawthorne is about a tragedy of a beautiful women called Georgiana. She married
a addicted scientist who is never in love with her. The scientist named Aylmer
is a perfectionist, he cares about his scientific inventions only. He did not
realized the birthmark on Georgiana’s face at first. One day after they got
married, the man Aylmer took a close look at her and found a hand shape
birthmark. He was disgusted by it and called it evil hand while other people
said the birthmark was attractive. The hand mark’s color changes as Georgiana
changes her mood, and Aylmer was finally exploded. He try potion on Georgianan
and put put her life on risk to satisfy his overloaded confident of his
science. When Georgiana passed, he was still obsess with his failure.
From this article, I
found a theme is one would take any cost to satisfy own desires. Aylmer was so
enjoy of scientific competition, and he always wants to be the top in this
field in order to feel comfort. He wants to demonstrated his ability of
controlling one’s fate. Aylmer puts her wife in danger for his desire of
perfection. Obviously he knew about the harm of potion, but he still executed
it. This shows he is selfish person, and he can do anything for his purpose.
One thing he could never foreseen is the costly price of been a perfectionist.
One should never harm others for own pleasure, the outcome may be dramatic.
